Engine Timing Chain
This Iwis timing chain is a direct OE replacement for BMW applications. Each BMW S85 engine uses two timing chains. Although designed as a lifetime component, timing chains can stretch over time, leading to noise, misalignment, or tensioner stress. Replacing worn or noisy chains before failure is critical, as a broken or derailed chain can cause severe engine damage.

The timing chain synchronizes the crankshaft and camshafts, ensuring that valves open and close precisely during intake and exhaust strokes. Constructed from high-strength metal links, it is engineered for long-term durability but must be replaced if stretched or damaged.

Engine Timing Chain Failure Symptoms
• Rattling or slapping noise, particularly noticeable at startup or idle.
• Poor engine performance, reduced acceleration, or sluggish response due to incorrect valve timing.
• Severe wear or breakage can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
