Though timing chains are generally built to last the lifetime of the engine, they can stretch or wear over time, especially in high-mileage applications. When that happens, the tensioner may be overworked and engine timing can drift—leading to poor performance or even severe mechanical damage.

Typical symptoms of a failing timing chain include:

  • Rattling or Slapping Noise: Especially noticeable at startup or idle, due to excess chain slack.
