Although BMW advertises automatic transmission fluid as a "lifetime fill," regular service is essential to maintain proper lubrication, cooling, and long-term transmission reliability. Transmission fluid degrades over time due to heat and contamination, just like engine oil, and should be replaced at recommended intervals.
ZF recommends servicing 8HP automatic transmissions every 8 years or 80,000 km (50,000 miles), whichever comes first, to ensure optimal performance and durability.
The integrated transmission filter plays a critical role in protecting the valve body, solenoids, and internal fluid passages from harmful debris. Contamination can lead to issues such as delayed shifts, harsh shifting, or even loss of gear engagement in severe cases. A restricted filter may also reduce fluid flow and cause an RPM-dependent whining noise from the transmission pump.
Replacing the oil pan and filter assembly during transmission service is strongly recommended, especially when servicing high-mileage vehicles or replacing major transmission components such as the torque converter, pump, or valve body.
