This OE VDO mass air flow (MAF) sensor accurately measures the amount of air entering the engine to ensure the correct air-fuel mixture. It uses a heated film element—known as a “hot film”—to detect airflow changes. As air passes over the sensor, it cools the film, and the system adjusts current to maintain a constant temperature. The amount of current needed correlates with the air mass, allowing precise measurement. While efficient and self-cleaning, these sensors can become less accurate over time due to contamination or wear.

A failing MAF sensor can trigger the check engine light and lead to poor throttle response, rough idling, or even limp mode. A quick way to diagnose a failing MAF is to disconnect it; if engine behavior improves, replacement is likely needed.
