This OE VDO mass air flow (MAF) sensor with a 3-pin connector accurately measures the air entering your BMW’s engine, helping the DME (engine control unit) optimize the air/fuel ratio. This unit uses a “hot wire” sensing element, which heats a wire and monitors how quickly incoming air cools it—translating that data into airflow readings. As the sensor ages, its readings can become inaccurate or it may fail altogether, leading to drivability issues or a check engine light.

When the MAF sensor fails, the engine may run too rich or lean, experience stalling or hesitation, and trigger fault codes. Disconnecting the sensor and observing engine behavior can help confirm a faulty MAF.
