This OE Bosch mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume of air entering the intake system, enabling the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate the correct fuel injection for optimal combustion. It uses a hot film sensing element—a thin heated layer that reacts to airflow changes. As air passes over the film, the cooling effect is used to determine precise airflow. This ensures smooth power delivery, fuel efficiency, and proper emissions control.

Hot film sensors are self-cleaning and highly accurate, but like all sensors, they degrade with age and contamination. A failing MAF can lead to poor engine performance, reduced fuel economy, or even cause the vehicle to enter limp mode. Unplugging the MAF and noticing improved idle or response can help confirm a faulty sensor.
