The upper mount houses the strut bearing, which can develop play, binding, or a rough, crunchy feel as it wears. Replacing both mounts during front strut installation helps restore proper steering movement and prevents premature wear of the new suspension components.
Suspension Strut Mount
Strut mounts are common wear components on vehicles equipped with MacPherson strut suspension. They secure the top of the strut assembly to the chassis while allowing the assembly to pivot as the vehicle is steered. Over time, the bearing can wear or bind, and the mount's rubber isolator can crack or deteriorate, resulting in noise, looseness, vibration, and reduced steering performance.
For optimal suspension performance and service life, both front strut mounts should be replaced whenever new front struts or complete strut assemblies are installed.
