Service Description
This is a Repair & Rebuild Service for the Genuine BMW S85 VANOS high-pressure oil pump used in the E60 and E61 M5 and the E63 and E64 M6. The pump supplies the hydraulic pressure required for the S85 Bi-VANOS system to control intake and exhaust camshaft timing.
The outer ring of the pump bearing can gradually deform or crack with age. If the pump is serviced before the bearing seizes or causes extensive internal damage, the original unit can often be rebuilt and returned to service.
-
You must ship your original VANOS pump to us for inspection and rebuilding.
- The internal pump service includes:
- Complete pump disassembly
- Internal component and housing inspection
- Cleaning of the pump housing, pressure valves and reusable internal components
- Replacement of the outer pump bearing ring
- Replacement of the pump’s internal O-rings and pressure-valve seals
- Installation of a new pump drive sprocket
- Reassembly and final inspection of the serviced pump
Please note: Removal of the pump from the engine and reinstallation after service are not included. This listing covers the internal rebuilding of the removed VANOS pump and includes the additional parts required to complete the engine-side reassembly.
Included Parts for Engine Reassembly
The following components are supplied with your serviced pump but are not installed during the internal pump rebuild. These parts must be installed on the engine when the VANOS pump is refitted:
- New VANOS pump drive chain
- New stationary pump-chain guide
- New pump-chain tension guide
- Chain-guide mounting hardware
- Remaining O-rings and seals required for pump installation
The pump chain and guide rails are located within the engine assembly rather than inside the removable pump itself. They are therefore returned loose with the serviced pump for installation during engine reassembly.
Pump Repairability
This service is intended for pumps with a worn, cracked or deformed outer bearing ring and otherwise reusable internal components.
The replacement bearing component is the outer bearing ring only. The internal needle bearing is not included. If inspection reveals a seized or damaged needle bearing, damaged pump housing, worn shaft, damaged pumping elements, damaged pressure valves or other extensive internal damage, the pump may not be rebuildable.
We will contact you if additional damage is discovered before completing any work outside the standard rebuild service.
Common Failure Modes
-
Bearing-ring deformation: The outer bearing ring gradually loses its original shape under load
-
Cracked bearing ring: The ring fractures and can no longer properly support the needle-bearing assembly
-
Bearing seizure: Advanced bearing damage can cause the pump to bind or seize completely
-
Pump sprocket wear: Wear at the sprocket teeth can affect chain engagement and pump operation
-
Drive-chain wear: Chain elongation can create excessive movement within the pump-drive system
-
Chain-guide wear: Worn guide surfaces can allow improper chain movement and additional mechanical noise
-
Seal deterioration: Hardened or flattened O-rings can contribute to pressure loss or oil leakage
VANOS Pump Failure Symptoms
- VANOS-related fault codes or check-engine warning
- Low or inconsistent VANOS hydraulic pressure
- Limp mode or reduced engine power
- Delayed or inconsistent camshaft adjustment
- Poor throttle response or reduced high-RPM performance
- Abnormal mechanical noise from the VANOS pump-drive area
- Visible damage to the pump bearing ring during inspection
Service Recommendations
The VANOS pump should be serviced before the bearing seizes and damages the pump housing or internal components. A functioning pump with a cracked or deformed outer bearing ring has a significantly better chance of being rebuilt successfully than a pump that has already seized.
The included drive chain and chain guides should be installed when the serviced pump is refitted. The VANOS high-pressure line, pressure accumulator, oil connections and surrounding seals should also be inspected during reassembly and replaced if damaged or leaking.
Shipping Instructions
You are responsible for shipping your removed VANOS pump to us for inspection and rebuilding. Return shipping from us back to you is calculated at checkout and included in your total.
Drain all oil from the pump before packaging it. Seal the pump inside a strong plastic bag, protect all openings and use sufficient cushioning inside a sturdy shipping box. We are not responsible for components damaged due to poor packaging or fluid leakage during transit.
Do not include the original chain, guides, hoses, brackets or unrelated components unless specifically requested.
Include a printed copy of your order confirmation email, or clearly write your order number and contact information inside the box.
