Product Information

This new Genuine BMW idle air actuator, also known as the idle control valve or idle control device, is designed for the S65 V8 engine found in the BMW E90, E92 and E93 M3. It electronically regulates the amount of bypass air entering the engine at idle to help maintain stable engine speed, smooth operation and proper low-RPM response.

Idle control valve failure is a common source of idle-related problems on the S65 engine. Earlier E9X M3 models were particularly known to experience actuator failures, with many units replaced during the original warranty period.

With age, mileage and heat exposure, the internal electric motor, actuator mechanism and position-sensing electronics can deteriorate. Contamination inside the valve may also restrict movement, causing the actuator to stick partially open or closed.

Common Failure Modes

  • Electrical failure: Internal motor, position-signal or electronic control-board malfunction
  • Mechanical failure: Seized motor, sticking mechanism or restricted actuator pathway
  • Contamination: Internal buildup preventing the valve from opening or closing correctly
  • Connector damage: Broken pins or degraded electrical connections caused by heat, age and vibration

Idle Air Actuator Failure Symptoms

  • Rough, unstable or wandering idle
  • Idle speed fluctuating below or above its normal range
  • Limp mode or engine-management faults triggered at idle
  • Throttle hesitation or delayed response at low RPM
  • Engine stalling when slowing down or coming to a stop
