Common Failure Modes
-
Folding drive wear: Internal motor and gear wear can prevent the mirror from completing its normal folding movement
-
Gear failure: Worn or damaged drive gearing can cause clicking, slipping or incomplete operation
-
Pivot and rotating assembly wear: Wear within the rotating mechanism can create excessive play or incorrect mirror positioning
-
Binding mechanism: Aged lubricant, contamination and mechanical wear can increase resistance within the folding assembly
-
Incorrect folding position: Wear or loss of mechanical indexing can cause the mirror to stop incorrectly, travel too far or become unsynchronized with the opposite side
Failure Symptoms
- Right mirror does not power-fold
- Passenger-side and driver-side mirrors fold or unfold in opposite directions
- Mirror stops before reaching its normal folded or driving position
- Mirror travels beyond its correct position
- Clicking, grinding or slipping noises during operation
- Intermittent or inconsistent folding operation
- Mirror feels loose or has excessive mechanical play
- Mirror requires manual assistance to fold or return to position
Service Recommendations
We recommend sending the complete affected mirror assembly whenever possible. This allows the original folding mechanism, frame and associated components to remain together throughout the rebuilding process and ensures the complete assembly can be properly cleaned, rebuilt, aligned and tested.
Do not force a mirror that has stopped moving or repeatedly operate a mechanism that is clicking, binding or travelling beyond its normal position. Continued operation can cause additional damage to the internal drive and rotating components.
Bespoke Program
Custom refinishing of the exterior mirror housing is available through our Bespoke Program. This can be added to the rebuild service for customers looking to restore the complete mirror assembly or create a specific exterior finish.
Available requests may include refinishing the mirror mounting triangle and base in black, color-matching the exterior mirror cap to the vehicle, restoring an existing painted finish or creating a custom combination of finishes. Other paint and refinishing configurations can also be considered depending on the requested specification.
For bespoke requests, please file a service request and select Bespoke Program as the service type. Include your vehicle details, paint code if available, desired finish for the mirror cap and mounting triangle, and any reference photos or special instructions.
Submitting the request before ordering allows us to confirm feasibility, paint requirements and the best configuration for your mirror restoration.
