This OE VDO 3-pin mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine and helps regulate the ideal air-fuel ratio for optimal combustion. It uses a hot film sensing element, which maintains a constant temperature. As air flows over the element, more current is required to maintain the heat—this change is translated into airflow data sent to the ECU.

Over time, contaminants can accumulate on the sensor and degrade its performance. A faulty MAF sensor is a common cause of check engine lights, rough idling, poor acceleration, or limp mode. One quick diagnostic method is to disconnect the sensor—if the engine runs better, the MAF may be failing and should be replaced.
