The control unit manages operation of the engine's glow plugs, providing the electrical control required for reliable cold starting and proper diesel combustion during the warm-up period.
Unlike gasoline engines that use spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture, diesel engines rely on compression-generated heat for combustion. When the engine is cold, the glow plugs provide additional heat within the combustion chambers to help the engine start efficiently. The glow plug control unit regulates this system and ensures the glow plugs receive the appropriate electrical supply when required.
A failing glow plug control unit can contribute to difficult cold starts, extended cranking, rough operation immediately after startup and glow plug-related fault codes. Replacing a failed unit restores proper control of the glow plug system.
