Ce boîtier de thermostat d'origine Wahler régule le débit du liquide de refroidissement dans le moteur afin de maintenir une température de fonctionnement optimale. À froid, le thermostat reste fermé pour accélérer la montée en température du moteur. Une fois la température optimale atteinte, il s'ouvre pour permettre un débit normal du liquide de refroidissement et stabiliser la température du moteur.
Pour de nombreuses applications, plusieurs températures nominales de thermostat sont disponibles, spécifiant la température d'ouverture du thermostat. Choisir la bonne température est essentiel pour maintenir une température moteur idéale, notamment dans les climats extrêmes.
